A nicely written guide to success. Many statements the author made are what a lot of us already know but don’t use to our advantage. Other intriguing topics covered in the book included the choice to be successful or not and how to stop worrying about what other people think of you. A straightforward self-help book. Would recommend.

While I was sceptical as I don’t usually meditate, I found both the morning and nighttime audios really good as they brought both a positive start to each day and ensured that you slept anxiety-free. This book has definitely been a major contribution in my journey of living life remaining positive, present and happy.


A practical, easy to follow self-help book from Irish author Fiona Brennan. Would recommend.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare – book review


Clary Fray is seeing things: vampires in Brooklyn and werewolves in Manhattan. Irresistibly drawn to the Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, Clary encounters the dark side of New York City – and the dangers of forbidden love.

Overall Plot

Clary Fray is a normal teenager living in an apartment with her mother Jocelyn. On a night out with her best friend Simon, Clary witnesses something bizarre in a nightclub and discovers the secret world of the Shadowhunters.


I have been wanting to read City of Bones for ages but never got around to it, until now. I have seen the movie adaptation starring Lily Collins and really enjoyed it. I wanted to compare the book and the movie so I ordered City of Bones from my local library. (City of Bones is book 1 – there are 6 books in total).

I loved this book. I loved Jace’s wit and sarcasm and how he kind of gave off a bad boy vibe but was a total sweetheart underneath. I loved reading about Clary discovering everything she never even knew about herself, her family and that the world was filled with all sorts of demons.

Jace and Clary pretty much clicked straight away and I hate to say this but I totally ship them – cue the cuteness overload. I enjoyed learning about the other characters too such as Alec and Isabelle (siblings) the fellow shadowhunters and Simon (Clary’s best friend) who did I mention is so cute. Damn you Clare for giving me yet another crush on a fictional character.


I admit that the ending threw me off a bit (like wait what just happened!?) but I know it’s all going to sort itself out because there’s five other books in the series. (I may have looked up some spoilers online) but anyway, really enjoyable and funny read filled with plenty of action. I can’t wait to read City of Ashes!

How I learned to cope with my anxiety and how you can too!

I’ve had anxiety since I was in 2nd year so I was first diagnosed around 4 years ago. I’ve had it a long time but over the years I’ve learned different ways to cope with my anxiety and make it easier to live with. In today’s post I’m going to share with you some ways you can also learn to live with your anxiety.

Deep breaths/going outside for a walk

Sometimes if I’m really anxious I’ll listen to some soothing music or guided meditation. I usually just take some deep breaths for a few minutes or go for a 30 min walk to relax.

Remain positive    

I’ve tried my best to give up the whole negative thinking and while I do get bad days, by embracing positive thinking and being grateful, it has drastically changed my mood and indeed my outlook on life.

Accepting that I’m not perfect

I might always have anxiety because it’s genetic but that doesn’t mean I can’t keep being myself. So what if I get anxious at the till or my hands start shaking if I’m speaking in public? I still exercise, watch my favorite 80s movies, laugh at funny vines. I’m still me.

Showing people the door

Let’s face it, lots of people suffer from anxiety. While you will meet people who are understanding of your disorder, you will also meet people who might judge or criticize you because of your mental health. In that case, show them the door.


Sometimes when I get a bit overwhelmed I just want to escape for a while so I read a book. It helps me leave reality for a little bit until I’m feeling better.

Listening to music

This one pretty much speaks for itself. If I listen to calming music or even songs about anxiety, it helps me cope with it.


Whether I’m walking in the fresh air or gone for a late night swim, exercise instantly improves my mood and is an important factor in reducing my anxiety.

This self-help book is for introverts like myself who feel like they never quite fit into the world but Cain shows that while being quiet can have its cons it also has many pros. She highlights this through a serious of personal stories from young introverts of all ages.


I was expecting a lot more from this book. I had read the synopsis for Cain’s previous book,*Quiet: The power of introverts in a world that can’t stop talking * and it seemed quite good but I couldn’t get it in my local library so I ordered Quiet Power instead.

I am definitely an introvert which I’m sure much of the population are. We introverts like to keep to ourselves, prefer reading to socializing or going to parties, we tend to be quite shy rather than loud. However, this book didn’t really delve into the world of an introvert. A lot of the stories included seemed kind of repetitive (this girl was quiet, then made friends and then she learned how being quiet isn’t such a bad thing).

In reality, this rarely happens. Introverts sometimes may come across as rude but we don’t mean it, it’s just hard to keep up a conversation or engage in small talk. As a result, it can be hard for introverts to make genuine lasting friendships.


Cain listed some famous introverts in Quiet Power such as Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi and Emma Watson who have all achieved incredible things. Cain also included some of her own personal stories about growing up as an introvert and also included valuable content such as how to make the most out of social media.

However, the rest of the book was a bit too bland for my liking.

Mental health issues are hard enough to deal with on their own but combined with stigma and discrimination, it can be difficult to be yourself for fear of being judged. Some people just don’t understand but are supportive and that’s okay but sadly, others maybe do/don’t understand your diagnosis but stigmatize you or define you based on your illness. This book was published in 2008 and I can tell you from reading this alone that a lot has changed in terms of clothing and crafts. Trends have been constantly changing in the 11 years since this book was written so some of the tips are quite old-fashioned and dated. However, there is some quite useful information within this book which may come in handy.

There’s a little section called seasonal food where Knight shows all the fruits and when they are in season which I thought was quite useful. Knight also recommends shopping at farmers markets, eating locally produced honey and to be smart with sales in order to live comfortably on a budget.

India Knight encourages us to take up hobbies such as knitting, crafts and quilting to bring out our creative side which also saves money.

 Knight also touches on topics within the fashion industry such as which high street brands oppose child labour.


A nice book detailing how to save money but still manage to look good and have fun nonetheless.

Mentalhealth-athon review

Hello June! May really did fly. May was a very eventful month filled with everything from mental health awareness, to Eurovision and various readathons. I took part in the mentalhealth-athon for the month, a readathon dedicated to reading about characters with different mental health issues.

While I didn’t get to read all of the books as they were unfortunately unavailable in the library, I did manage to learn about a few mental health disorders. A very interesting readathon or as Josh from Clueless would say, It was a good learning experience for me –
